Chamomile Herbal Tea

As tea is gaining more and more popularity, chamomile tea has become a favourite for people all around the globe. Chamomile is a plant that originated in Europe and is of two types, the German Matricaria chamomilia and the Roman Chamaemelum nobile.

The flower of the plant is traditionally used in ancient medicine as herb that is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, is a powerful antioxidant, and nerve soother. It has also been considered sacred by Egyptians as a healing herb. It has interested the scientific community and much research has been done documenting the uses of the herb as it contains flavonoids and terpenoids.

Chamomile is a caffeine-free herb. The flowers are dried and consumed as herbal tea mostly around sunset or bedtime as it is known to promote sleep. There are various ways of preparation of chamomile tea and it can be made into both hot tea and iced tea.  The powdered form is good for tea bags but the original flavour of the tea can be best appreciated when used as loose leaf teas. Steeping times vary with each individual, however, can be in generally steeped for 5-15 minutes.

The tea gives off aromatic notes of apple with pleasant fragrance and light golden liquor. It has a unique distinctive flavour which make is more interesting and suits most palates. One can instantly sense a calming effect and relaxation upon consuming after a stressful day. It is no surprise that this tea is consumed across the world more than one million cups every day!
